wk5 - Gaga, Macklemore, AND . . . ?

Think about the Lady Gaga and Macklemore examples I have provided and do a little research of the culture for yourself. Provide just one example where an artist/cable series/film, (etc.) speaks with conviction (takes a stand—makes a truth claim) regarding the issue of human sexuality.

NOTE: After posting on the blog, open up the CANVAS assignment (by the same name) and DO copy and paste the URL address into the CANVAS "WEB URL" text box so that I have record of your submission on Canvas. Thanks.

  1. Phil Robertson says that "gays are full of murder, envy, strife and hatred. They are heartless, ruthless, and God haters." He obviously does not believe in gay marriage and is a guy that closely follows the word of God and believes people should follow God's word as well.

  2. The guitarist of the Christian Metal band For Today, Mike Reynolds runs into some trouble on social media responding to the article of 'Dallas Voice' in the removal of Louie Giglio's. He tweeted "No such thing as a gay Christian, the same as there is no such thing as a Christian who loves his sin" and "Don't be deceived, homosexuality is a sin. This sin with all other sins is what Jesus died for. He conquered so that we would be free." Mike was very upset about the article bashing Giglio, so he thought it was a good idea to send this straight to social media when after he posted those, fans assumed those tweets as hate crimes.

  3. Demi Lovatos' songs called "Really Don't Care" is a song that she wrote where she states that she is not going to let anybody tell her who she is, is wrong. Although the song in general is not specifically about human sexuality it is about where she is speaking with conviction about you can be who you want to be where its gay or not. The music video on the other hand is filmed at a gay pride parade where everyone is singing the and dancing to the song.

  4. In the song “Take Me To Church” Hozier, the artist, is using church language to explain his relationship with his “lover”. The song refers to a female at many parts as he calls her a goddess, but the video would suggest otherwise as it has two men in love. Hozier uses more specifically the Catholic churches terms as speaks about confession, “I’ll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife” and so on, which can tell people he hasn't had a very good experience with the Church. He uses the church terms to argue his point that the Catholic church and the Protestant church make sex outside of marriage look like this very bad and dark thing and he sees it as a very good and pleasing experience. He explains this in the bridge when he says, “No Masters or Kings when the Ritual begins, there is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin. In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene, only then I am human, only then I am clean.” Of course we know that God made marriage as it is to be holy and pure, Hebrews chapter thirteen verse four says, “Marriage should be honoured by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexual immoral.” God does this not because He doesn't like people He does this because He knows that when people sleep with multiple people it hurts them, and He wants sex to be between two people because it establishes a bond between the two. After all God created man and woman and created marriage and as well sex.

  5. Hozier, the artist of the hit song "Take me to church." just based on the lyrics alone you would think that the song is just based on someone is going to church and praying their heart out. And the church isn't accepting them, but it doesn't directly tell you why it just gives you hints. During the first verse it says "the only heaven ill be sent to, is when im alone with you." Which hints at you that their gay, and since it is a sin they would not be accepted into heaven. Another example is "we were born sick you heard them say it." like the church just doesn't approve. But when you watch the video you clearly see that the two men homosexuals. And they try to hide it, and when the "church" found out they kidnapped one of them and killed him.

  6. Madonna's song "Human Nature" is a song that speaks with conviction about human sexuality like the Lady Gaga song. The chorus of the song says "Express yourself, don't repress yourself." It also talks about having your own point of view.

  7. In the Hozier song "Take me to Church," the speaker talks about a homosexual relationship. He also talks about how when people associate themselves with the church, but are filled with nothing but hate, it does not make him want to turn to God. It is critiquing the church in this way.Although homosexuality is wrong,we should not beat people up for their beliefs, instead we should find a balance of conviction and compassion. This way we are not perpetuating the stereotype that all Christians are judgmental and hateful, because the old saying goes: you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. This is not to say we should be all on the compassion side of the spectrum, but find that balance.

  8. In Frank oceans song "Bad Religion" we see him talk about his problems to a taxi cab driver. The cab driver states "Allahu Akbar" which means praise God. At this time ocean begins to talk about how he will never have God love him because of his truth in disguise. He states, "To be in love with someone Who could never love you" this is in reference to God not loving him because he is gay he also states, "This unrequited love To me it's nothing but A one-man cult". Ocean is saying that he is in a one man cult and that it will eternally kill him because God will not stand for his cult or sin.

  11. Katy Perry describes in her song: “I kissed a girl“, the problem with the temptation of trying something new. Homosexual temptations are an actual topic. Even Katy Perry grew up in a Christian family which characterizes until today. Even the video was shocking for a lot of people, because Katy Perry kissed a girl. She states: “You're my experimental game, just human nature.” That shows was the natural behavior is. People like to learn something new.

  12. Eli Lieb's song "Young Love" sounds ok at first, but once you look up the music video you realize the song is about two guys. With a little more research you can find that Eli Lieb is gay himself. This song talks about holding hands and holding each other. So this song is no doubt a pro gay song.

  13. Katy Perrys " i Kissed a girl" is about Katy Perry struggling with the homosexual temptation of kissing a girl. In the song, she gives into the temptation and says " i kissed a girl and i liked it, i kissed a girl just to try it". Growing up in a small Christian family this action would have never been accepted. Perry's song demonstrates her conviction behind homosexual experimentation.

  14. Octavia Spencer, an actress most commonly known for her role in the movie “The Help”, recently said “I’m pro-marriage. If it’s gay, it’s gay. That’s what they have to start saying. It’s not about gay marriage. Just be pro-marriage. And people will say, ‘Well, I’m pro-marriage.’ Just take the gay out of it -- that’s what freaks people out. Just be pro-marriage for all.” It is obvious that by this quote Octavia is pro gay marriage. She is taking her stand and claiming that anyone should be able to get married and that people shouldn’t be weirded out by people saying “gay marriage”.
