  1. In his essay,Gobry explains that progressives are not going to back down until Christians affirm gay marriage. Although that does not seem likely to happen because many Christians are sticking to their guns when it comes to the issue. He gives a brief history of sexuality in the church.

  2. The article “Why so many Christians won’t back down on gay marriage“, written by Pascal-Immanuel Gobry, gives the answer to the topic question, that “History and Christianity’s […] self-understanding” prevents the people from becoming homosexuals. At the beginning of his article, he compares being against homosexual marriage is like being racist in the society. “[T]he bible” provides the “Christianity”, and therefore as soon as “readings from the Bible fall into social disfavor, Christianity adjusts them accordingly”. Human sexuality according to the bible shows “unique sexual complementarity between men and women”. “Sexual acts” between both genders should be “meant to reflect God’s love by fostering a union at once bodily and spiritual – and creates new life.” Creating “new life” is only possible through heterosexual connection”. Since the beginning, Christians living a different life, because they “understood a particular sexual ethic”, which forbids “homosexual acts”. The “faith […] as fundamental precepts of Christian ethics, […] make[s] [the] same-sex marriage an impossibility”.

  3. Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry explains in his article, "Why so many Christians won't back down on gay marriage", that the "homosexual" community will try to, "force Christianity to affirm same-sex marriage." He also mentions that they (being the homosexual community) believe it wont take but a little "prodding" to make Christianity cave to society. Gobry, on the other hand, believes that history says other wise and that Christianity has long been grounded and even set apart with our idea of "sexuality". For thousands of years Christianity as claimed marriage as a resemblance of God, because of the intimacy that is shared between the two that come together. God is love and the Creator of all things and He created a woman to be the partner that suited Adam and they were joined together through intimacy and became one flesh. Because of that a child is created signifying the creation side of God, and because when two people get married they enter into a covenant with each other mirroring the covenant God has with us. Gobry understands that the “homosexual” community believes that Christianity will “affirm” homosexuality and conform to what the world wants them to conform to, but 2000 years of history has set us apart and we wont back down from God’s word.

  4. Gobry's article is about how a majority of Americans already favour same-sex marriage and that the acceptance of it will continue to rise. In urban and progressive areas it is now beyond politically correct to oppose to gay marriage. In these areas they compare opposing same sex marriage to supporting racism. Gobry says that the bible states, "sexual acts between both genders should be meant to reflect Gods love by fostering a union at once bodily and spiritual- and creates new life." creating new life is impossible for gay couples, since christians have been living a " different life" they have understood a particular "sexual ethic" ( which forbids homosexual acts). this is why so many christians won't back down on gay marriage.

  5. In the article Why so many christians wont back down from gay marriage, Gorby writes about how there is conflict between homosexuality and christianity. We see how "A majority of Americans already favor same-sex marriage". Gobrby writes that the homosexual movement is trying to pick and press at christianity because they believe that christians will soon bend the rules and except there lifestyle. Gorby goes on to explain how christians have help to there religious story and laws for over 2,000 years. Gorby states in closing the article "History and Christianity's own self-understanding suggest, however, that such an outcome is not in the cards."

  6. In the article "Why so many Christians won't back down on gay marriage", is briefly about people who are agreeing with same sex marriage. But in the second passage says, "That is to say, anyone who expresses opposition to same-sex marriage would be ostracized, with many progressives hoping to employ a variety of social and governmental means of coercion to force gay-marriage opponents to the margins of society". This quote states that when people are trying to make a point about same sex marriage that they would be punished for it. But at the same time same sex marriage is being accepted more and more everyday which continuing to affect the society in a strong way.

  7. Gobry uses his essay to explain how people described as progressive will not stop until the Christian community accept gay marriage. Throughout the essay he speaks of sexuality in the history of the church. Also, he tells about how unlikely it is for Christians to accept gay marriage.

  8. In the article “Why so many Christians won’t back down on gay marriage” Gobry simply explains why we as Christians won’t cave into the world’s ways. He explains that unlike other things Christianity has had a very consistent history with their stand on sexuality. We didn’t give into prostitution, polygamy, divorce, or any other thing that goes against the Bible on sexuality. We have always stood firm. We have stood firm in our beliefs for over 2000 years, and I believe we can keep on standing strong. Just because the world keeps trying to force us to give in doesn’t mean we have to. We haven’t caved in yet and hopefully we never do.

  9. In Gobry’s article, Why so many Christians won’t back down on gay marriage, he explains that gay marriage is accepted by almost everyone and that “in many urban and progressive circles, it’s beyond impolitic to oppose gay marriage”. Further he states “that there’s a movement underfoot to make opposition to same-sex marriage akin to support for racism… it’s important to understand that this movement is based on a premise that is based on a misreading of history”. He explains the false premise and agrees that there is some truth in it. And while there is some truth in it, it is fundamentally mistaken because “the history of Christian ethics actually shows that the faith has been surprisingly consistent on the topic of sexuality”. From the beginning Christians have understood the importance of sexual ethic and the logic of it prohibiting homosexual acts. Many gay-marriage proponents want to force Christianity to support and encourage same-sex marriage. However, the history of Christianity suggest that it is not an option.

  10. Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry explains in his article "Why so Many Christians Won't Back Down on Gay Marriage" about the issues with some Christian based belief on homosexuality from the Bible's text. Gobry believes that Christian belief on some sexuality is out dated and unnecessary for others to hear. He uses sources to support his argument from the Bible itself claiming other types of sins and types of praises most people would not agree with, "There are verses in the Bible that condemn homosexuality, but there are also verses that condemn wearing clothes made of two threads, and verses that allow slavery. Christians today find ways to lawyer their way out of those." He is explaining that most of these sins and praises are picked out by Christians to work with such as homosexuality. Most Christians would not go back to the methods of slavery at any such. Overall, Gobry makes very good points and I do agree with his statement with different intentions such as a Christian perspective in his article, but I do not agree with his topic of claiming ALL Christians act this way and weasel their way out of situations with the Bible. I am a sinner and I have to live with that. I believe in removing my 'plank' before pointing out somebody else's 'splinter.' I am a Christian yes, and my belief is to follow God's word and live Christ-like everyday of my life. I do not believe in the method of force feeding religious statements down others who sin. Jesus speaks, "If one has yet to sin, cast the first stone."

  11. Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry explains the way gay marriage is being accepted by so many people in today's generation. Gobry goes into talking about how everyone besides Christians believe in the "right". He believes that Christians will bend the rules just like other various rules one day to make gay marriage a right in Christianity.

  12. In Pascal-Immanuel Gobry's "Why so many Christians wont back down on gay marriage" he believes that same sex marriage is favored by most. And that it will continue to be favored in society. If you oppose same-sex marriage you will be disliked by the community. In reality no one really cares if you dislike gays, because they are not going to stop being themselves. Gobry says this this when talking about being a homo sexuality " there are also verses that condemn wearing clothes made of two threads." Saying that there are verses that really don't mean a lot so all sins are the same. So being a homosexual is the same sin of wearing clothing made of two threads.

  14. In the essay, "Why so Many Christians Won't Back Down on Gay Marriage" Gobry explains the strength and steadfastness that Christians have had in our faith throughout history. In explaining how Christians have stood firm, Gobry also explains how some "Christians" take what the Bible says and adjusts it accordingly to fit in with society. Some Christians do not do as Romans 12:2 tells us, instead they do conform to the ways of the world, and they try to justify it by distorting scripture. However, many Christians have stood firm in their faith. They do not waiver on their beliefs on many topics. Christianity throughout history has always had a strong stance on human sexuality. From the beginning Christianity has opposed what seemed to be the cultural norm. Things such as polygamy, divorce, premarital sex, and homosexual acts have been unacceptable to Christians. So many people today want Christianity to accept and even adopt these cultural norms, however according to history and strong Christians today, that is not a viable option.

  15. Gobry is saying that in this society if a person is for same-sex marriage than that person is contributing to world. Those who oppose will be forced to except something they view as wrong and or be labeled on outcast. Same- sex marriage is being forced upon us whether we like it or not. People are misinterpreting the bible so they can try and influence others to go against what they first believed. Christianity is based off of the bible but when you take away the bible Christianity losses its main resource. Gobry fully expresses the whole “they say, I say”, movement by stating the opposing argument first then stating his. The opposing argument is, “Christianity, as a historical social phenomenon, basically adjusts its moral doctrines depending on the prevailing social conditions.” While his argument is “not every single bit of Christian morality has held constant over a history that spans two millennia.” He continually uses this method all throughout his article.
