  1. Summary
In part four of In the Garden of the Beast we first off get a personal insight to Hitler and Dodd having a face to face meeting. The meeting is normal except Dodd gets a little anxious when Hitler gets a very aggressive tone when they converse on the League of Nations. Later on we see the return of Diels and find out that he is an officer again. Diels invites Martha to a trial of communist accused of arson. We once again see inside Martha’s love life and see now that she has fallen deep in love with the Russian communist Boris. In the end of part four we see Hitler’s power start to take place. He makes people vote yes for his foreign affairs policy. Germans have to marry Germans so there will be no mixed breeds.

    Paraphrase
    P.173 last paragraph
The trial was no longer a death sentence, but the issue was unfixable. A Swiss repeater, like many other countries reporters saw Goring’s rage changed the outcome. It didn’t matter if the defended was prosecuted or not his fate had already been settled.

I chose this paraphrase because it is just a good example of how the government is changing. It doesn’t matter if the court accuses someone if the Nazis’ or the public fined you guilty you will disappear.

    Quote
“On every commercial vehicle, post office van, mailman’s bicycle, on every house and shop window, on broad banners, which are stretched across the street- quotations of Hitler everywhere and always ‘Yes’ for peace! It is the most monstrous of hypocrisies”.

I chose this quote because I shows the under lying scheme of Hitler and the Nazis’. Hitler makes billboards, street sign, and signs that even go on bicycles declaring peace in Germany. I would say Hitler maybe does want peace in Germany for natural Germans, but mainly he wants power and the inhalation of all the Jews.
I believe this quote went well because it shows how people see the crap Hitler is speaking.

  2. Part IV of In the Garden of Beasts begins with a meeting between Dodd and Hitler. The meeting was about affairs between Germany and the United States. Next it talks about when Martha met Hitler. She describes him as very charismatic, and "charmingly helpless." It goes on to describe laws in place such as no marrying of Aryans to non Aryans. Toward the end of the part, it is Christmas. Dodd notices a lot of Christmas spirit throughout Berlin.

Dodd became very paranoid and suspicious that there was a campaign against him in the state department. He did not trust the stenographers so he began to write his own letters.

"One might think the Germans believed in Jesus, or practiced his teachings!"
This is an important quote because it shows how the German officials are able to put up a facade of goodness, when in reality, they are evil.

  3. It’s interesting to see how at the beginning of part four of In the Garden of the Beast we get some insight on Hitler himself. We see that Hitler can change his attitude from formal to surprisingly angry, especially when the League of Nations is brought up in the meeting Dodd and him where having. Dodd tried to speak out to what was going on; (pg163) “He wanted to have an effect: to awaken Germany to the dangers of its current path and to nudge Hitler’s government onto a more humane and rational course. He was fast realizing, however, that he possessed little power to do so”. With this we see just how much power Hitler actually had; people would just go with it just because Hitler said it and one could say different. We see the start of Hitler’s insane plan to “purify the race” and him enforcing abortion laws except for when the women is caring a mixed breed baby. Meanwhile Martha was invited by Diel to a trial that was convicting four arsonist which in the end resulted in a huge brawl between lawyers ending the trial. Also we get more information on Martha’s love life with a Boris and we are able to see their love lives grow.

  4. Summary: Part IV starts off with Dodd giving us some personal information about Hitler. We learn that he started off as just a commoner. Even with all his power and control he still dressed poorly, but he somehow could change for the better before his speeches especially if he was mad about a topic. We also find out Hitler was bad about lying to Dodd and others. He would convince Dodd and even himself that something was true, but then it would never happen. Later on in part IV we see that Germany is still becoming worse and worse. Now people who didn’t even know they had Jews in their family tree were finding out they had a little bit of Jew in them. This resulted in the suicide rates going up. These rates probably weren’t very accurate either because the Germans would try to say something else caused their death even when it was clearly suicide. The Germans put on a good front with Christmas decorations at the end. Some participated in decorations even if they didn’t believe in Christ.
Paraphrase: Wollstein and his father, who are both Americans, get wrongfully searched and charged. They were arrested based off of what other people said about them. The officers didn’t have any actual proof. They were just going off of what these men’s friends had said. To get free they had to sign a note saying he wouldn’t “be an enemy to the German State.” This is significant because it shows how controlling Germany is. Americans can no longer say anything they want anymore. They don’t get any special treatment, and they’ll get thrown in jail just like everyone else.
Quote: “One might think ‘he wrote,’ “the Germans believed in Jesus or practiced his teachings!” This is significant because it shows just how well Germany covers up. Germany is putting on such a good act that someone on the outside of the country might actually think this is a Christian nation even though they are so far from it. Even some ignorant insiders might think they’re a Christian nation, because everywhere they look they see Christmas decorations. Hitler learned very well how to hide what was actually happening.

  5. Part 4 is about the meeting with Hitler and Dodd. Hitler and Dodd talk about the relations between the US and Germany, its also about the problems that both the countries have towards each other. Hitler gets very angry when the League of Nations gets brought up and Dodd gets a little nervous when Hitler gets angry. Later in the part Hitler demands that Aryans must not marry any people that are not Aryan, only Aryan people.

"But I don't understand why Chrstians adore the sight of a tortured man."

This quote is important because it shows that Germans do not really believe in God and why people actually worship him. If the Germans believed in the life of Jesus then they probably would not be doing these terrible things to people in different countries and to their own people.

  7. Chapter four starts off with Dodd giving us background information about Hitler before they meet. During their encounter, Dodd and Hitler discuss affairs between the USA and Germany and also the league of Nations. When the League of Nations is brought up, Dodd gets nervous because Hitlers tone quickly changes to aggression. Also, Diels returns and we find out that he is an officer again. Diels then invites Martha to the trial of the communist accused of arson. Once again we get an in-depth look at Martha's love life and see she has fallen in love with Boris, a Russian communist.

    paraphrase
Hitler wanted the best representation. Across all of Germany, the nazi party went to extreme measures to make sure people would vote for the Nazi party. (176)
this quote is important because it shows how willing Hitler was to take over Germany

    Quote
In the text, we learn that Martha no longer loyal to her father. She ends up being with Boris however no longer needs to hide it. Larson goes on to say," Now Martha and Boris felt freer about revealing their relationship to the world" (179). this is significant because Martha moved across the world with her father who is the American Ambassador

  8. In part IV Hitler and Dodd have a meeting. They talk about matters of the U.S. and Germany. Then it explains Martha meeting Hitler. It then talks about the laws set for marriage. The law says that no Aryans can marry a non-Aryan.
Dodd was very concerned that there was talk against him. He became paranoid and did not trust others.
“But I don’t understand why Christians adore the sight of a tortured man.” This is important because it shows how the Germans actually were. They did not believe in God. If they did they wouldn’t have done these horrible acts.

  9. 1) Part VI of “In the Garden of Beasts” Dodd and Hitler have a face to face meeting. In the meeting Hitler gets angry at Dodd when he brings up Germany and the League of Nations. Dodd really wanted to awaken Germany on the danger of Hitler. Martha “went on a date” with Hitler, but nothing was ever mentioned about it again. Boris comes back into Martha’s life. Then, Germany has a vote on Hitler’s foreign policy. 95.1% of the people voted yes for Hitler’s new plan, proving how feared he is. There were new laws put in place that allowed Germans to only marry other Germans and laws that made it harder for Jews to find jobs. There was a ball in Berlin, in which Dodd noticed all the Christmas spirit that was in Germany.

    2) In the first chapter of part VI Dodd has a meeting with Hitler. Dodd asked Hitler “why he pulled Germany from the League”. Hitler was extremely angry and criticized the Treaty of Versailles and how it allowed France to be in superiority over Germany. The meeting in total lasted 45 minutes, and although Hitler was angry, Dodd was still convinced Hitler sincerely wanted peace. This is relevant to the book because it shows how deceitful Hitler was. Although he showed his true self in the meeting with Dodd, he was still convinced that Hitler was a peaceful person. I believe that is one of the ways that Hitler was so powerful, is because he was so deceiving to others. He was also feared by the people of Germany, and by other World leaders. Nobody wanted to upset Hitler or call him out, in fear of the consequences that they would suffer.

    3) Chapter 24 is talking about how Germans were required to vote selecting new delegates on the “newly reconstituted Reichstag” and on the foreign policy question. People paraded around the streets wearing stickers proudly showing that they had voted yes. On page 176 the book states “Some 45.1 million Germans were qualified to vote, and 96.5 percent did so. Of these, 95.1 percent voted on favor of Hitler’s foreign policy. More interesting, however, was the fact that 2.1 million Germans- just shy of 5 percent of the registered electorate- made the dangerous decision to vote no.” This quote is relevant to the book because it is showing just how powerful Hitler is. People honestly feared him. They feared him so much that they would vote yes on something that didn’t believe in. Party men and the SA monitored who voted and who didn’t. Hitler was a powerful person, and it was obvious to everyone.

  10. Mr. Dodd meets with Hitler in person in part IV. They have a casual conversation where Hitler says that Americans will be left alone, however when Dodd mentions Hitler’s withdrawal from the League of Nations he gets furious. Hitler went on a rant, but Dodd remained with his belief that Hitler really wanted peace and the betterment of Germany. Martha even went on a date with Hitler. Hitler was a very sly person and became really good at lying to everyone. Germany continues to get worse and, people are beginning to get worse.

The Dodd family continue to see a false “good” in Hitler. Even after Dodd met with him and he became angry Dodd still believes that all Hitler wants is peace. Germany continues in the downward spiral, and people begin to notice more and more.

I feel like Martha and Dodd both want to see the good in the situation that Germany is in. After meeting with Hitler and seeing him blow up over a question, Dodd still thinks Hitler has good intentions. No matter what anyone told her, “Martha was still committed to seeing the best in the Nazi revolution.”

  11. Part IV is mainly about the changing view of Martha, her affairs and Dodds on the one side problems with his government and on the other side the growing violence in Germany. Martha met still a lot of “suitors”, even though she had a deep affair with Boris. Her view changed from completely positive to a critical one. The American government and its employers are not really aware of the situation happening in Germany. Dodd is a central part of critic’s und betrayal. Dodd and Martha, both, met Hitler in person. Both have different views of him.

Göring was not able to stay calm anymore. He yelled upset, “You will worry when I arrest you. Outside the court building, you have no rights.”
This shows what the situation was in Germany. People were afraid to tell the truth, because they had fear to lose their lives or the lives of family members. This shows as well, that the Nazi leaders didn’t have arguments, when they got problems they started threatening.
“She had fallen deeply for this man and could no longer treat him in the same way she treated her other conquests.”
This is an important passage of the text, because Martha’s behavior changed completely. From wanting several men at the same time, she felt love for Boris and wanted to stay with him. Only with him.

  12. In part four of the novel “In the Garden of the Beasts” Dodd talks more about the personal side of Hitler. He said “He was said to be Indolent. He rose late, worked little, and surrounded himself with the lesser lights of the party with whom he felt most comfortable” Basically saying that he didn’t want to be around people that he was comfortable with all the tine. He wanted to go out of his box a little bit, because by doing that you learn how to adapt. He also loved the movie King Kong and music by Richard Wagner. And the fact that he dressed badly with or without the mustache. Dodd’s first subject was how they mistreated the American’s and Hitler was very apologetically about it. But if he really was sorry for what he did then he would have stopped doing it completely. He was just telling Dodd what he wanted to hear.

  13. In Part IV of the book "In the Gardens of Beasts" is written around Mr. Dodds and his meeting with Adolf Hitler still set in Berlin, German. Mr. Dodds assigns this meeting to ask Hitler his thoughts on Germany and its future. Also to ask about his decision with the League of Nations. Ending on that note, Mr. Dodds was not the only one meeting with Hitler. Martha soon in part four had herself a little meeting with Adolf as well, a "date" if you will. Soon after this so called "date", Boris soon showed up back to Martha and continued the romance chase between the two.

In the section on page 201, Dodds started meeting with high powers of the German government to work his way up on having a meeting with Adolf Hitler. This section is very significant to the text because it shows how hard and how much he needed to meet with Hitler to find out what has been happening in Berlin.

"He came from plebeian roots and had failed to distinguish himself in any way, not in war, not in war, not in work, not in art, though in this last domain he believed himself to have great talent."(157) This quote speaks about the SS soldier in chapter 20 of "In the Gardens of Beasts." The quote is rather describing the ways people live in Germany now that it is ran by Adolf Hitler and the SS army which is what this chapter is describing. It is describing the beginning reign of Hitler and the war.

  14. In Part IV, they meet up with Hitler and Martha decides to have a meeting with Hitler as well. The meeting was about the how Germany is going to look in the next couple of years. As we get more into the section, they made a deal with the League of Nations. The government is trying really hard to take care of all the violence and trouble that's going on in the country of Germany. In closing, Martha and Dodd are really trying to team up with Hitler to help out the country of Germany. "That night, over dinner, she told her parents all about the day's encounter and how charming ad peaceful the Fuhrer had been." This quote Martha is talking about the experience she was having when she was discovered the Fuhrer.
