  1. More than “Mutual Joy” summary 1
Gagnon does not like the fact that Miller with no understanding of the bible is questioning and stating what is in it. He shows his dislike by saying, “She claims” in the second sentence in his article. Within the first two sentences Gagnon shows how much annoyance he feels towards Miller. He points out that she does not have a bachelors in theology and that she has an English degree. He doesn’t like the fact that in Millers article it doesn’t seem like she read the bible much at all she just got quotes from a Reverend. Gagnon point out that all of her arguments that she used to support her case are untrue and arrogantly stated. He says that she cares little in the actual history of the texts that she puts in her article. Gagnon starts disusing about Paul and completely shuts down Millers argument that Paul was “ok” with homosexual sin. Gagnon also shuts down Millers argument that David and Jonathan acted in homosexual manner. He is basically telling Miller that if she is going to make an article about something she should do more research and get her facts straight.

  2. More Than Mutual Joy Summary Part 1
    Luke Edge
In his essay, Gagnon argues that the Bible in fact does say that marriage should be between a man and a woman. He talks about how man and woman are counterparts in physical union. Homosexuality, according to Gagnon, is very well represented in the Bible, explicit and implied. He suggests that it is such a fundamental issue, that it does not need to be discussed as much; among other topics such as bestiality and incest.

  3. Dr. Gagnon seemed really upset with Miller right from the first sentence. He said that her article on “Mutual Joy” was “hopelessly distorted and one- sided”. He then points out that she isn’t certified to be writing about gay marriage. She is an English major not a theology major! In his opinion Miller didn’t think critically while writing her essay. Throughout Gagnon’s response to her he disproves her points in every aspect. He uses actual Biblical references not blown out of context (like Miller’s) to show why homosexuality is indeed a sin. Miller ignored all the Bible passages that disproved her point, and Gagnon exposed them. Gagnon says “it is clear that her argument is being driven more by a preconceived ideological objective than by a sincere desire to go where the evidence leaves.” Meaning that she is just trying to prove a point, and she doesn’t really care how it’s proved. She won’t go to controversial texts because she can’t compete with them.

  4. Gagnon says that the Bible does say that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Gagnon also says that Miller is not very educated in the theology and that she her arguments were not true or accurate. Gagnon completely disagree with what Miller has to say about Paul saying that he was fine with homosexuality, Paul was completely against homosexuality sin.

  5. More than „Mutual Joy“
In Gagnon’s comment “More than “Mutual Joy“: Lisa Miller of Newsweek against Scripture and Jesus“, he criticizes Lisa Miller’s article and corrects her whole text by changing it into the truth. Thereby, he uses a forceful tone: “Miller arrogantly declares…” At the beginning of his comment, he explains why Lisa Miller is not the right person to write an article about this specific topic, because of her “academic credential […] in English at Oberlin College”. In addition, Gagnon says that she quotes people who are not objective concerning this special topic so that they are not a veritable sources. His structure works with first giving in his opinion wrong solution and secondly changing it in the way, he thinks it is true.

  6. Gagnon’s article in response to Millers is about the fact that Miller has no understanding of the bible. Gagnon states that the bible in fact says marriage should be between man and women exclusively. Gagnon says that Millers article was “ hopelessly an distorted” because Miller has no theological background, she is an English major. His frustration can be seen when he uses phrases like “ she claims” because he knows that this is simply a false statement. All of Millers statements were untrue and arrogant and little history was included in Millers text. If Miller is going to make an article about anything, she should do more research on the specific topic

  7. Robert A. J. Gagnon in his article “More than ‘Mutual Joy’: Lisa Miller of Newsweek against Scripture and Jesus, argues that Lisa Millers article “Gay Marriage: Our Mutual Joy” is a “hopelessly distorted, one sided” argument. He goes to explain that she doesn't think critically about her reasoning and offers three primary components to show how bad the Lisa Miller’s article was. The first half talks on Gagnon’s first component; a discussion of Scripture apart from the witness of Jesus. Gagnon’s first strong point is, “A strong Male-Female Prerequisite throughout Scripture” and this is to counter Miller’s attack as she says that Scripture does not explicitly talk about a Male-Female prerequisite for marriage. Gagnon also explains that the Male-Female prerequisite is implied at the very beginning of Scripture in Genesis 2:21-24, when God made woman He made her out of man so they may come back to be joined as “one flesh” in marriage. Lisa Miller also argued that the Apostle Paul never explicitly talked about homosexuality and was just talking about corrupt Roman emperors for which Gagnon offers scripture (Romans 1:24-27) and explains Paul’s stance and beliefs on homosexuality and about lesbianism (Romans 1:26). Gagnon further explains the Holiness Code in Leviticus and how Christians should still uphold it and the relationship of David and Jonathan.

  8. In the article “More Than Mutual Joy” author Dr. Robert Gagnon provides a 26 page response to Lisa Miller’s “Our Mutual Joy” that is in the December 15, 2008 edition of Newsweek. Dr. Gagnon tears Miller apart, calling her out for not making an effort to think critically and for failing to cite any of her sources. Miller states in her article that “the Bible only condemns homosexuality in a handful of passages”. This is disproven on page three of the article with texts from Deuteronomy, 1 Timothy, and 1 Corinthians. Miller also references what she calls “throwaway lines” in Leviticus, in which Dr. Gagnon shows why those lines are relevant by stating that Leviticus 17-24 contains “what Jesus calls the second greatest commandment “you shall love your neighbor as yourself” (19:18).” The article contains numerous examples of Miller’s one sided arguments that are proven wrong by passages from the Bible. The article by Dr. Gagnon is tastefully done by using proper “they say” arguments such as “she claims…” and “as evidenced by...”. He took Miller’s arguments, proved why they were incorrect, then backed up his opinion with facts from scripture.

  9. Gagnon throughout his essay argues the fact that the Bible says that marriage should be between a man and a women. He states that the Bible has many verses that speak against homosexuality. Gagnon urges us that the issues of things such as bestiality, incest, and homosexuality.

  10. In the text, Gagnon is very passionate yet very angry when talking about this subject. He clearly thinks that The Bible states that marriage should be between a man and a woman. You can tell the tone of the Gagnon when he stated that Lisa Miller's article was "distorted." Distorted in this sense meaning twisted out of shape. Gagnon is saying that she used the Bible and twisted the words to make it seem like there were no scriptures or verses stating that you couldn't be married to the opposite gender. When clearly there were

  11. In the article "More than 'Mutual Love'" by Dr. Robert A. J. Gagnon speaks about another article written by Lisa Miller "Our Mutual Love." In the article, Gagnon writes about some of the issues and opinions he had for Miller's article. Gagnon is completely against Miller's statement strategy towards gay marriage and traditional marriage, "Miller makes a number of bad moves. She exaggerates discontinuity and downplays continuity between marriage values in Scripture and our own value." Speaking of how Miller was not a good writer for her resources and how uneducated she was for trying to use scripture as her source when she knew nothing about the Bible. Overall, Dr. Gagnon made excellent points about Miller's poor efforts and strategies in her article. She had poorly placed sources and an informal mind set for the audience to understand her side of the statement.

  12. Gagnon's article is about Lisa Miller of Newsweek against Scripture of Jesus. "First, that the image of marriage in Scripture is so alien to anything that would be acceptable to us today that we should run as fast as we can from any appeal to Scripture against “gay marriage." This quote speaks about people that runaway from appealing about 'gay marriage'. “Scripture gives us no good reason why gays and lesbians should not be (civilly and religiously) married—and a number of excellent reasons why they should.” This piece of the article mentions that the Bible doesn't give us a clear response to why gay marriage isn't okay, but it is found in the Bible and it's a sin to marry the same sex.

  13. Dr. Gagnon seems to come back at Miller firmly; he speaks like he is strongly offended by her "argument" and ignorance on the issue. "There is not the slightest effort on Miller's part to think critically about her own line or reasoning. Gagnon begins to go into details about what exactly the scriptures say regarding the topic. Miller says homosexuality is okay because there "are only a handful of scriptures that speak against it"; however, Gagnon says that just as homosexuality may not be mentioned that much, what makes us think other sexual inversions are any less acceptable? like bestiality for example. Even Paul, in the New Testament, speaks against homosexuality saying that it is "sexually impure," "Indecent," and "unnatural." Gagnon believes that homosexual practice should be taken seriously because is the Levitical Holiness Code it is the only offense tagged with the word "abomination, something abhorrent to God."

  14. In this essay Gagnon is highly angered and in difference with miller. Gagnon Does not agree in the way Miller believes that gay marriage objections are not rooted in the bible.Gagnon goes on to say that "There can be no doubt about the fact that Jesus took sexual sin with the utmost seriousness." Gagnon talks about sermons Jesus gave on sexual sin. Gagnon in conclusion states, "Lisa Miller’s article is so poorly researched and so badly (and arrogantly) argued that the editors of Newsweek should be ashamed of themselves for publishing it."

  15. In the article, More than "Mutual Joy", Dr. Robert A.J. Gagnon bashes a lot of Lisa Millers work and reasoning's. He has a whole section in his essay titled "Leviticus and Miller's Bad Analogical Reasoning". Gagnon believes that Miller made a number of bad ideological moves. He says that she shows little or no understanding of the historical and literary contexts of the texts that she treats. She ignores just about every major argument against the position that she espouses. Gagnon is clearly annoyed and angry toward Millers reasoning's. He states that "There are plenty of laws in the Old Testament delimiting acceptable and unacceptable sexual relationships between a man and a woman." This tells me his views on the subject. This tells me that he's not for gay marriage and that the Bible tells us what we should be doing and same sex relationships doesn't tie into that.
