wk6 - WARREN – quotation sandwich

From Warren’s “The Wrong Kind of Christian,” create a “quotation sandwich”: locate a pertinent quote, build a “frame” around it, and “blend” the author’s words with your own. While being fair and accurate, use the quote, but bend it to your purpose; use it for your “I say”—yes / no / okay, but.

NOTE: After posting on the blog, open up the CANVAS assignment (by the same name) and DO copy and paste the URL address into the CANVAS "WEB URL" text box so that I have record of your submission on Canvas. Thanks.

  1. Tisa Warren quotes, "God is still beautifully at work." This quote means a lot to me because sometimes we as sinful natured humans, we take Gods creation for granted. I feel like God doesn't get a lot of credit from his children. After all he's done, God has done enough even when he didn't have to. Warren may not have been able to go back to Vanderbilt, but at least God gave her the opportunity to be a part of that organization. Or maybe it was a sign saying that she needs to change her lifestyle because he didn't create Warren to like alcohol. So I agree with Mrs. Warren about Gods creativity, but its seems like its her turn to take her own advice and apply that to her lifestyle.

  2. Warren's perseverance through all the turmoil she went through to try to salvage her organization shows that she had a passion for what she was doing. She had a very strong drive. In Warren's conclusion, she moves from her experience to comparing how bad other Christians around the world have it; telling us about the "violent brutality" and "rejection" that they go though.Warren writes, "We need not be afraid; the gospel is as unstoppable as it is unacceptable." I agree with Warren, as this is a point that calls attention to it because so many people misunderstand that power of God's Word. She is saying here that yes, there are a lot of people who oppose the gospel, but just as much oppose it, it is that much more powerful in the transforming of lives. She gives a kind of challenge to us as Christians to not shy away. We are to take our stand in the truth of God's Word with humility in our hearts.

  3. The Wrong Kind of Christian- quotation sandwich
With everything that is happening in this world a lot of it is about religion. In Warrens ‘The Wrong Kind of Christian’ she states that, “Increasingly, orthodox beliefs are practices are forbidden as those in power forfeit a robust understanding of religious pluralism,” I agree with this whole heartedly. There are people out there being killed because they are Christian or someone doesn’t like what they believe in. More and more people are beginning to think that being Christian is a bad thing because others say that it’s not what we should believe. They’re people out there who are high in power and can influence the world so much, so if they say something is bad people believe them and don’t question them because of their high status.

  4. In her essay, Warren states, "Creedal discrimination is still discrimination." This means that even though the discrimination is because of your beliefs, it is still discrimination and is wrong. We should not discriminate against someone because their beliefs are different from ours. Instead, we should use these differences to learn from each other.

  5. Tish Harrison Warren explains that, “the gospel is as unstoppable as it unacceptable.” She says this because even through the darkness of Vanderbilt kicking Christian groups off of campus the Gospel of Jesus will continue to spread and will never stop. She explains that students are still in labs and the classroom, “reflecting Gods creativity through the arts and seeking cures for cancer.” The students are still loving their neighbors and praying for the campus and yes they're still struggling with the issue not being able to meet on sight but that doesn't stop the Gospel from spreading. This show the love that she has for the students and the students love for the university and God and shows beautifully Christianity and the love of Christ. Even through hard times and simple oppression they push on and rejoice in God.

  6. Tish Harrison says,"I met with him to understand the change. During the previous school year, a Christian fraternity had expelled several students for violating their behavior policy". This quote is saying that she had to make a change of her lifestyle because she joined a Christian fraternity that got rid of some students due to the fact that they changed there lifestyle.

  7. Warren states, "Creedal discrimination is still discrimination." In other words, discrimination, even though you feel its right is still discrimination and wrong. We cannot discriminate against other peoples beliefs because not all people will feel the same way about different things.

  8. In Tish Warren’s article The Wrong Kind of Christian, Warren tells the story of how her student organization got kicked off of Vanderbilt’s college campus due to their belief standards. In the conclusion of her article, she claims “From it’s earliest days, the gospel has been both a comfort and an offense.” (Warren 3) This is such a powerful statement. Warren is claiming that Christians are always under attack. People often times believe that Christians should be compassionate and attempt to make the gospel more acceptable to all people; however, we should not sacrifice our beliefs in an effort to reach more people. The gospel brings comfort and hope to many Christians, yet often times people get offended when Christians stand up for their beliefs if it is not accepting of all people. The Bible speaks the truth, and you can’t conform its truths to the world’s preferences.

  9. Warren sys that "Creedal discrimination is still discrimination." This means that even though you feel that a certain discrimination is right its still wrong because God doesn't believe in discrimination. It is not right to discriminate against any other peoples beliefs because not everyone believes in the same things.

  10. Tish Warren says “God is still beautifully at work. And his mercy is relentless.” This quote really stuck out to me because it seems like there is so much wrong going on in the world. We can even see the wrong in Vanderbilt University and other universities around America. Even with all the wrong going on I can still see God at work. He even worked in Vanderbilt through the Christian students there. His mercy is definitely relentless. He has shown America so much mercy. Even though America has turned her back on God he still loves us. Even though we deserve judgement he grants us a lot of mercy.

  11. The topic of homosexuality is a big debated topic nowadays. Not only if it is legal or not, but if it is tolerated by the bible and God? Is it allowed to ban somebody of the church or any other institution because of his sexual temptations and desires? In the essay “The Wrong Kind of Christian” one student got big problems because of his desires, “one student said he was ousted because he is gay”. Even of homosexuality, the house of God is open for everybody, and even homosexuality according to the bible is a sin, they could love God, like the friend of Rosaria Butterfield in “Openness Unhindered”, Rebecca.

  12. All discrimination is equal, whether it be gender, religion or age. Warren states, "Creedal discrimination is still discrimination". this means that even though you may thing discrimination against someone is just, it is still wrong. God does not discriminate towards anyone.

  13. In the article "The Wrong Type of Christian." Tish talks about her experience with religious and sexual conflicts in her time working at Vanderbilt University. The school banned her from campus due to forming Christian groups on school grounds. Vanderbilt was not comfortable with those terms with some differences some attending students had. "But the university saw belief statements themselves as susoect. Any belief-particularly those about the authority of Scripture or the church-could potentially constrain sexual activity or identity." Warren is explaining that the University sees many different types of belief around campus, but Christianity is singled out due to sexual sin and homosexuality mentioned in Scripture.

  14. Tish Harrison Warren the leader of Graduate Christian fellowship writes. "I value words, love careful argument, and believe good ideas prevail." I agree with Warren as with love and carful argument good ideas can prevail in the most part.

  15. There are not many things that get me mad but when Tish Warren stated that "... a Christian fraternity had expelled several students for violating their behavior policy. One student said he was ousted because he was gay" Why, why cant a homosexual be a Christian. Or at least be apart of a Christian frat. That doesn't make sense because we all sin, so how is their sin any less important than his. Just because he sins in a different way, it makes no sense at all. Some people are so stuck on being a good Christian that they don't realize that their being a bad one. God say's love thy neighbor, doesn't mean exclude the ones that are different.
