  1. 1) Quote- The first paragraph of part VI speaks on the feeling that was in Berlin. “The city seemed to vibrate with a background thrum of danger, as if an immense power line had been laid through its center.” (263) This quote is relevant to the text because it is really showing how the people of Berlin felt. It summarizes the fact that Hitler has taken over completely, and everyone is now starting to see his power. However, Hitler has not shown the full extent of his wrath. Later in the paragraph it states “…the atmosphere in Berlin was that of an approaching thunderstorm…” This also shows that while Hitler has not shown the worst of what is to come, most everyone can sense that something bad is happening even though they do not know what it is.

    2) Paraphrase- On page 284 Papen gave a speech. He started the speech by recognizing the fact that he must view Hitler’s effects on German development critically. Then, as a very bold statement, he stated that The Government is well aware of the “selfishness, lack of principle, the insincerity, the unchivalrous behavior, the arrogance” which increased under Hitler’s rule in the German revolution. This is important to the text because it is really the first time that someone has publically stood up to Hitler and called him out on his wrong doings. This was a bold move, and anybody of “lesser stature” would have surely been killed. This also relates back to Larson’s research question, “why didn’t anyone try to stop Hitler”. I view this as a subtle attempt to stop Hitler. Papen stood up and called Hitler out, even though he wasn’t directly trying to stop him or end him.

  2. In this section of “In the Garden of the Beast” Dodd has just gotten back to America and already has an opportunity at a big job even though it went to someone else. The Messersmith dinner was something very extravagant and fancy, and everyone of importance was the there except Hitler. And society then did not focus on who did go they focused on who didn’t. Then there was another dinner in Berlin hosted by a friend of the Dodds but they weren’t invited. I believe that he didn’t invite them because Hitler was going to be there and he didn’t want any controversy between the two parties. And he knew no one else would do it. Then Hitler held what he called a secret dinner “Dodd’s main reason for wanting to see Dieckhoff was to express his dismay at having to be made seem naive.” He wanted to apologize because even if it wasn’t Hitler he still could be killed.

  3. The people in Berlin, Germany were extremely weary of everything around them. No one felt like they could trust anyone. The first part of part VI describes the feel of Berlin in a negative way, “a popular metaphor used at the time to describe the atmosphere in Berlin was that of an approaching thunderstorm-that scene of changed and suspended air” (pg.263). Dodd Just got back from America when he heard that the job opening that he had been wanting went to someone else. Messersmith hosted a party that had everyone who was important there, but not Hitler. But not long after there was a second party hosted by a friend of the Dodd’s but the Dodd’s where not invited, mainly because Hitler was attending the party and no one wanted a problem to occur between the two.

  4. In Part VI, all the people that are in Germany aren't doing so well. They all were going through a faze of not trusting anyone. "The increase evidence of social and political oppression came more and more to trouble Martha, in spite of her enthusiasm for the bright, blond young men whom Hitler attracted by the thousands." This quote is about the evidence and political stuff that's going on in Germany. Martha is also going through a lot of trouble because Hitler was only attracted to certain people.

  5. In this part, the people of Germany are in distress. Papen gives a speech calling Hitler out about his wrongdoings. This was one of the first attempts at doing so. This was a very bold and dangerous thing to do.

"Dodd knew that even for a man of Dieckhoff's rank such talk was dangerous." This is important because it shows that even though someone is high up in rank, they are still being censored. The people are oppressed.

  6. In part VI, Papen holds a speech in which he calls out Hitler and what he has done. He was the first person to do anything like this. It was also dangerous to do because Hitler could have sent people to get Papen.

"The increase evidence of social and political oppression came more and more to trouble Martha, in spite of her enthusiasm for the bright, blond young men whom Hitler attracted by the thousands." This quote really shows how evident the political side of Germany is.

  7. Paraphrase: In Part VI everyone is becoming aware of the danger that is around them. They are now feeling the danger around them. Martha was even figuring out all of the oppression. Her love for Germany was dying down despite all her positive thoughts she once had.
Quote: “The fear and oppression that Martha saw in Fallada crowned a rising mountain of evidence that throughout the spring had begun to erode her infatuation with the new Germany.” (274) This is very significant because if Martha is starting to see the bad in Germany it must really be getting bad. She has been completely blind to the bad this whole time. It has to be pretty bad for it to be opening her eyes.

  8. Part 5 is about the struggles that are going on in Germany. There was a lot of negative attitudes going on in Germany and many people felt that they could not trust one another. Later in the story Papen gives a speech that basically takes a shot at Hitler about all the wrong things that he is doing, till this point he was the only person to call out Hitler. It was a very dangerous thing to do because Hitler could get mad and have you killed.
"The audience reacted as if its members had been waiting a very long time to hear such remarks." This quote is important because it describes the German people's feelings towards Papan about calling out Hitler and the government. People were very pleased that someone finally did such a thing and reallystood up for the German people.

  9. Paraphrase

    First paragraph of part 6

The city seemed to give off a great sense of fear as if a big power line had fallen down In the center.

This quote is significant because it is showing the true colours of the citizens in Berlin. It shows that everyone is starting to realize the true power of Hitler even though he is nowhere close to reaching his maximum potential.

    Quote
"i am told... that my share in events in Prussia, and in the formation of the present government" ( 284)
this quote is significant because it shows that pepen knows exactly what Hitler is about to do which represents the major question posed at the begging of the book, Why didn't anyone stop Hitler while they could?

  10. In the time after Hitler’s appointment to the chancellor of Germany, German writers, who didn’t fit into the Nazi ideology became divided into two groups. On the one side, the group of writers who left Germany, because they wanted to keep going with their idea of writing, and on the other side, the writers who stayed in Germany, thought it would be the best way, to back up from the society and just wait until the whole Nazi system crashes. This behavior got the name: “inner emigration”. The writer Fallada choose this way.
This passage is important for the whole text, because of the high pressure of the Nazi regime, people who criticizes the system, risked their lives. Not everybody decided to escape, sometimes they had no other choice causes by the family for example and then it was recommended for them to live an ordinary live.

Talking about the history and its consequences is always good. Even though it is important, that we learn the truth about the history. Ambassador mentioned this, while he was participating in a conversation with several people who were definitely enthusiastic, about the German Navy in the Great War. Dodd replied to these people, “If people knew the truth of history there would never be another great war.” Dodd hoped that the people would start realizing in which situation Germany and Europe was now, and they are more worried about what happened instead of being really interested in this topic.
This quote is important for the whole text, but not only for the text, it is important for our own life too. Dodd said this, during a discussion with Papen, Phipps, and Francois-Poncet, and others, about the First World War and the German Navy in it. Dodd realized, that if the people would be aware of the sorrow caused by the Great War, they wouldn’t start another big one. As we know from history, the fanatic system with Hitler, and the inactivity of the other nations, led to another big war.

  11. In part 6 of the book "In the Garden of Beasts" Germany is starting to fall apart quick from the beginning of Hitler's Revolution. Mr. Dodd immediately realized it at first to where he felt that the people in Berlin were very fearful and paranoid about their surroundings. They were praising Hitler at the beginning, but now they fear him like he were Satan himself.

The city seemed to vibrate with a background thrum of danger, as if an immense power line had been laid through the center." This simile based quote in part 6 of the book "In the Garden of Beasts" is referring to the signs reign in Berlin and the beginning mark of the next World War.

  12. Part VI
    Paraphrase
    First new paragraph on P.270
In the future months after Hitler became chancellor the writers from Germany that did not totally support the Nazis either hated the Nazis or listened to what there plan was.

So now people are made to make a choice either you were for the Nazis and listened to the rules or you hated them and feared for your life.

    Quote
“Have one,” Hansfstaengl said. “They are made espically for the fuhrer” she chose one. Just before she popped it into her mouth she saw that it was embossed with a swastika. Even fruit drops had been “coordinated” (265).

We can now see how the Nazi’s are taking full control of everything even candy is labeled with the swastika. They are getting out of control now and it is time for a stop.

  13. In Part VI, Mesersmith had been given the role of serving as the US Ambassador to Austria. At a diner party that was thrown for Mesersmith, it came about that Rohm wished to have control of the German army and air force. Things in Germany weren’t looking so good as usual. People have stopped trusting one another, and violence is at a high even among civilians.

When Papen gave his speech, it was almost like people had been waiting to hear what someone had to say about all this, but no one would step up and say it. “The time had come, he proclaimed, to silence doctrinaire fanatics.” Papen was calling out Hitler for his monstrosities, and the people cheered because no one had said anything like that before. They saw hope.

  14. On page 284 and 285 the talk that Papen would deliver a speech that his speech writer, Edward Jung and his secretary, Fritz Gunther von Tschirschky had written and had been kept away from him. Paren didn't actually see the speech until he got onto the train that was taking them to where the speech would be delivered and when he looked over it Jung and Tschirschky could see the fear that crossed his face. When Papen walked to the podium is fear level jumped up a but when he noticed a few Nazis sitting in the crowd. As he starts the speech he talks about the government and how the government needs to start respecting its people and not attacking them whenever there is criticism thrown at it and that the people need to be a part of the decisions that are being made and Hitler and the Nazis do not need to be making all the decisions. Once he finished the speech he had a standing ovation and as historian John Wheeler-Bennet says, ‘It was as if a load had suddenly been lifted from the German soul.”

“Historian John Wheeler-Bennet, at the time a Berlin resident, wrote, ‘It is difficult to describe the joy with which it was received in Germany. It was as if a load had suddenly been lifted from the German soul.”

This quote is very important to the story because it explains to people that not every German was backing Hitler and by the looks of it most of Germany was actually against Hitler and the Nazi party because of what they were doing. It shows that Hitler was loosing the support of the German people and Martha and Dodd even believed that the Nazi party would dissolve and a new government and leader would arrive and take Germany in a new direction. However Hitler such a control over the government already that he gained to much power to just simply be removed he would have to be assassinated along with his associates and then wiping the Nazi army and having someone take control then. Hitler has gained to much power by now and even though it looked as if he would lose the power he still had it.
